The Eurasian curlew, whose evocative calls have inspired a wealth of folklore, poetry, art and music, is now threatened with extinction in the UK

This project aims to raise awareness for curlew conservation by exploring the natural history and cultural significance of curlews, and assembling new musical responses to this iconic bird from leading musicians, alongside curlew soundscapes recorded at key sites around the UK.

“When I landed in the republic of conscience
it was so noiseless when the engines stopped
I could hear a curlew high above the runway”

— Seamus Heaney
